The atomic number tells you the number of protons in the atom (and what the element is).

The atomic mass number tells you the isotope of the element.

The atomic mass number minus the atomic nember tells you the number of neutrons in the atom.

The number of protons and neutrons in the atom, and so you'll know which isotope it is. Carbon-14 vs. Carbon-12, for example.
