In the late 70's and early 80's I had the great privilege to live in Sligo Ireland. St Patrick's Day was and remains a holy day and a day to recall the men and women who left their homeland and came here to the United States.

Getting wasted, drunk or otherwise embarrassing yourself and the Irish is an insult to our Irish roots, and totally lessens the sacrifice that so many made it fighting British oppression. It forgets those who suffered and died in the England's induced famine and those who faced signs here in America that said "No Irish need Apply"

The day should be spent in remembrance not in a drunken haze. Have some Irish pride for God's Sake

I enjoy making Corned Beef and cabbage with carrots and potatoes! I also enjoy going to a St. Patty's Day parade if one is around the area. I always wear green on St. Patty's Day, even though I am Protestant. If I have friend's over I will have some Irish Whiskey available and some green dye for the beer. Some bars will serve green beer, but I dont go to bars anymore. I have Irish decals on my windows and door...I like to watch the tap dancers too. If my niece is available, we will make some green cupcakes or shamrock cookies or something. If ya have some friend's over for an Irish meal and beer, it's fun to play some Irish music as well.

go to the parades, find irish music to enjoy, party, celebrate, bars. these are the norm for st patricks day but the true meaning of st patricks day can also add to the fun.

st patrick is our patron saint and helped bring christianity to ireland(it was already around but he helped make it stronger). the shamrock he used to represent the holy trinity and many believe the snakes represent evil and so he is attributed for driving evil out of ireland, ireland with its weather has no chance of having actual snakes.

the dubliners
wolfe tones
the clancy brothers
paddy reilly
luke kelly
the pogues
shane mcgowan

there are many others and there are alot of compilation drinking song cds etc...........keep the spirit of st patrick alive and enjoy the day no matter were you are but be safe aswell. slainte!!!!!!(means health,is used at toasts and can be used to replace cheers, salut etc......pronounced slan-cha

I don't drink, which kind of sucks on Paddy's Day, but I'll definitely go to the parade in Dublin and check out the Skyfest (although why it has to be in the effing Docklands is a mystery to me. I'll probably get lynched walking through there!). Other than that, I'll just have a laugh and enjoy not having to work :)

Get a bunch of snakes, put them in your car, and drive them out of town! Seriously, Guinness is the only thing you need, and maybe some irish whisky.

If you are of drinking age, get a pack of beers and drink. Or better yet go to a pub (or bar) with a bunch of friends and have a good time. Do not dive drunk, a death might ruin the fun.

Buy some green food coloring and put it in everything white or off-white - like mashed potatoes, white rice, pasta, cake and its icing. And by all means, put some in your beer or white wine! Avoid green meat and green teeth, however. The former will make you sick, and the latter will make other people sick.
