Sorry, I've never smoked nor had the desire to even "try one" when I was in high school years ago. I think however that the fact that you needed a smoke so badly that you picked up a half smoked cigarette off the street would motivate you to do everything reasonable to quit.

I understand it is tough. I've heard it is more difficult to quit smoking than it is to kick many drug habits. My mother died of lung cancer at age 57 after a life time of smoking. Her death wasn't quick or pretty; but it did motivate my sister to finally quit smoking. Good luck on reaching you final objective.

There was a guy that roamed around the neighboorhood where I used to work that did that. He would actually pick them up right after someone put it in the ashtray or on the ground. Occasionally he would ask for one from people. It was gross, but guess he was so poor he couldnt afford them, he was walking EVERYWHERE! We nicknamed him the "butt man"

Next time, please stop someone and ask for a smoke. You can catch things like Hepatitis from picking up other people's cigarettes.

So...Have you thought about what it could have been laced with? or if that person had HIV?
Not far off is the warning that your habit can kill you.
