To become a nurse--LPN-Licensed Practical Nurse, or an RN---Registered Nurse(which has a larger realm of practice than an LPN), you need to attend an accredited school.

For an LPN you can attend an LPN training program.
For an RN you need to attend a college or university. Now a days it is best to attend a four year college of nursing which is undergraduate training, and graduate with a BSN--Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Having a BSN does NOT make you a nurse.

Both types (LPN, and RN) then require you to sit for a separate Licensure exam after you finish your schooling which if you pass the exam you will be issued your License to Practice from your state.

A nurse, be it LPN, RN, BSN, or whatever requires necessary credentials, not a magic wand and somebody saying "Abracadabra - you're a nurse".

Heather below is correct. A BSN is a degree (very desirable in fact for someone going into) but it does not automatically give you the necessary license to nurse.
