i prefer zelda myself (even tho i've never even played anything from the final fantasy series

the legend of zelda came out in 1986 and the first final fantasy came out in 1987. enjoy both very much but if i had to choose one i would choose zelda.

Zelda came out one year before Final Fantasy on the NES. It was the first to feature a 'save feature'. Final Fantasy came out one year later and also featured the save system.Personally I like the Final Fantasy series better but that's probably just because I prefer RPG's (Role Playing Games) to just about anything. Also the stories are so amazing in FF that you really get into the game and feel for the characters. Zelda is a very good series though and looks to sustain it's momentum, although FF does too. It really just matters whether you like action/adventure or RPG's.

Zelda is way better in my opinion. I have played them both and I love Final Fantasy, but all that is in that game is fighting and movie scenes. In Zelda you can do so many other things, like little side quests and games. On final fantasy you can do this too but not nearly as much. it is basically just a straightforward game. you should definitely play Final Fantasy though.
Certain versions of Zelda came out first i think, but there are so many games in each series you kind of have to be specific.

I have played both and enjoy both very much. However, i would chose Zelda because its storyline is much more involved and the combat style allows you to fight in your style and not just in a turn based style like most FF games. Also Zelda is just plain a classic and a game that sells more than any other and helps a new console outsell both of the gaming industry's heavy hitters(Wii outsold both 360 and ps3 over the same period of time after initial release i think it was the first 3 months) Also I may be wrong, but after reading some of these answers i am under the impression that some people answering haven't played both games why would you answer if you dont even know what one game or the other is like....thats just foolish IMHO.

I prefer Final Fantasy better because of their story line, if you haven't played any Final Fantasy game, you should, is a MUST for any gamer. I think Zelda came out first.

Even though I enjoy both series, I like Zelda more.
As for which came first, The Legend of Zelda came first.

I'm pretty sure Zelda came out first. It was pretty much the premier RPG type game... way, way back in the day.
And, it's still the greatest series of games of all time!
Final Fantasy is pretty cool though.
