You can often have one in a restaurant if you do not wish to have one in someones home. You can check for restaurants that accommodate larger parties, but I do know Panera Bread has a nice set up for groups.
I work at a restaurant so I had mine there, it worked out well. We ordered a basic appetizer bar for guest and those who wanted to order more could do so.

Oh what fun! There are so many nice and fun places you can have it. I had mine at this "log cabin" type of restaurant and rented out the bigger "party" room. Traditionally, you could have it at a family member's house, or in a church community center or basement (my best bud did that, free of charge)... Or if its nice out, get a buuunch of blankets and do a "picnic" party at a local park. (sometimes they have picnic tables and pavillions for use too!) Or you could do a pool party thing, or garden party. If you want to do it someplace less traditional and not in a house, check around shops, and restaurants locally to see about renting or just spacious areas available for the day... I know my library has the childrens downstairs where meeting are help and stuff, and our coffee shop too.

For my shower, one of my relatives really wanted to have the shower, but lives in an apartment.
She reserved her complex's party room and invited various family members to decorate, bring food, etc.
It's going to be nothing 'shee-shee' or expensive, but it will be a nice, fun, family-and-friend get-together for me that I can't wait to go to.
It means more to me that my family cares so much and is trying so hard to make the day fun for me and are celebrating with me than any of the details.
Whatever you do, if you do it with love, I am sure that your expecting friend will greatly enjoy it and appreciate it.

There are many nice restraunts that have rooms you can rent and places like city halls and vfw's. Also, if its spring you could have it a nice garden type park or some nice outdoor place.
