I believe the current research shows that you should wait until 6 months before giving anything but baby milk (mom or formula).
Not long ago doctors would say 3 or four months was OK and years ago it was recommended to put cereal in the bottle. People still do this but it is not the latest science.
Now, some people use the jarred food approach at 6 months and it is popular in the USA but in other countries babies eat regular table food mushed up a little. Until 1 year they should still get baby milk and so table food is just for practice tasting and handling food.

Cereal you can start around 4 months,personally I would wait till closer to 6 months,babys digestive systems are not ready for solids too early so unless your doctor has advised to start cereal early I would wait till about 6 months.Jarred food I would start shortly after rice,maybe a week or so until they are used to eating off a spoon,as for real food you have to be careful that it is blended very well and also watch for allergys.

Oh lord your gonna get "your Dr will say 6 months", "not before 6 months" and all that but and this is the gods honest truth and very popular where I live: When I took my son in for his 2 month check up {a week before he turned 3 months} his pedi said to start him on baby cereal that at age 2 months a child is psychologically ready to eat. So I did he had baby cereal then 2 weeks later went on to veggies, then onto fruits. Yes I made sure formula was his main source of nutrition and watched for allergies. My son was a month early will be 10 months is developing at a 12-13 month level is 20 pounds happy, healthy and loved. And that to me is all that matters. I don't care what other say about not starting solids til 6 months hell when my daughter was born a premature infant 14 yrs ago I was told not to put her on solids til she was almost 2! So I think it depends on the Dr and of course whatever YOU are comfortable with
My son eats more table foods then he does the jarred stuff but no cows milk. He eats fresh fruits, whole wheat crackers, rice, mashed potato's, beans and anything that isn't "hard" to chewy {so no steak} he love Ravioli's, and spaghetti and even eats salmon! Hates french fries {thank goodness}

Start with rice cereal at 6 months.
Then, jarred 1st foods (introducing only 1 flavor a week) after a week or two after starting cereal.
Then, real food at about 10-11 months as long it is soft enough for her to mash with her gums.

Dr will tell you to wait until at least 6 months to give your baby any thing other than formual or breast milk. However I started feeding my 5 year old rice cereal mixed with breast milk and fruit when he was 6 weeks old. I have started feeding my 5 week old the same thing about 1 week ago. We never had any food allergies or being overweight, which is why they ask you to wait. I really think its up to you.

feed when you notice the baby is staying hungry, but start out with rice cereal, feed it for a while, at least a week, watch for any reaction, then go on to oatmeal, do it the same way, then wheat, then baby food out of the jar, vegetables first, then fruits, but please don't feed your child eggs until it is at least a year old, they are real bad to cause a reaction(i know this from personal experience)

I started using cereal in my baby's formula at 6 weeks, because she had acid reflux.
I started giving her jarred food at 7 months, and started giving real food starting at about 10 months.
Those are starting dates. My daughter is now 13 months, and I still haven't given her really solid food, but she eats spaghetti, rice, bagels, cream cheese, toast, bananas, beans......

You can skip the cereal (baby junk food) and jarred food (expensive and lacking alot) and go straight to real food when your baby starts picking it up.
We started my son around 7.5/8 months on soft table foods.
They don't need solid food for nutrtion for the first year, its just for play/practice.

start rice cereal at around 4-5 months, slowly add fruits one at a time over time. Add meats around 9 months, veggies around 6 months, table food around 8 months.
