actually although salad is bad for you, particularly from abroad due to water filtration system, rice is the most common food for food poisoning and goes of really really quickly, my sister in law recently sat a course on food hygeine and i was shocked when she told me, apparently rice carries vast amounts of bacteria, particularly when left out for any length of time, so never keep rice, even from a ruby the night before, bin it a.s.a.p

generally this is true and it is due to a number of things. The water in which it is washed may not be purified and so contaminate it, ice cubes being an example. The food, especially salad leaves may be grown under unsanitary conditions(Human and animal excrement used as fertiliser) which is not cleaned off. The vegetables may be prepared on the same boards as meats(Especially cooked meats) and so any contamination is transferrred. Poor staorage of foods allow bacteria to multiply and thus food poisoning or contamination. Play it safe only eat it if it is freshly and correctly cooked. If it has to be raw make sure you only eat what you can PEEL !!!

Additional reasons why they can be unsafe:
Salad BARS can be unsafe because some of the stuff sits out for a long time. Sometimes things are ADDED to what is already there, and things are thrown out or rotated, and the containers aren't always cleaned.
Also, many morons put their own forks in the containers to take more salad instead of using the tongs or spoons that are provided, or they bang the serving pieces on their places, which they've eaten out of already.

The ingredients that make up a salad are all good for health. But because they are eaten raw, one has to pay great attention to the freshness & cleanliness to eliminate dirt & germs. Not just the vegetable themselves, but recipients you put them in, the cutting board, the surface where you prepare the salad, & of course very important you have very clean hands too.

To be honest, I thinkyou would be more at risk from cooked rice as the spores multiply at an alarming rate - people blame dodgy curry or chinese meals for stomach upsets, but it's usually because the rice has been keep and use for longer than is safe. Any unused cooked rice should be thrown away and not reheated or kept for any length of time.

Think it may actually have something to do with the water it's washed in.
Rice is the most dangerous food for food poisoning. If it is not heated to a certain temperature or maintained at a certain temp after cooking.
