It's hard to say something is a 'Must See' because for people who see it everyday, it kind of loses its appeal.

But, let's say this is your only trip to London ever (doubtful). I'd recommend seeing:

Parliment / Big Ben
10 Downing Street
Horseguards Parade
Trafalgar Square
Buckingham Palace
Harrods
Picadilly Circus
Oxford Street
Westminster Abbey
St. Pauls
Tower Bridge / Tower of London

if you want, you can pay a bit and take the tourist 'hop on, hop off' bus which will take you around to all of these sites and more. If you want to save money, get a map and buy a travelcard on the tube (a must) and see it all via the tube and more importantly, the buses (much better view from a double decker than from the subway)

Those are all in the heart of London, and you can do all of it with a travel card (and some good sneakers). You're going to be walking, so just be ready.

Now, if you want to spread a bit out, why not hit some of the following:

Notting Hill / Portabello Road Market
Camden Town Market
Carnaby Street Shops
Greenwich (take a tour boat down the Thames)
A football game on Saturday the 31st (Charlton, Fulham and West Ham are all home that week in London, as our QPR (fun place to see a game) and Crystal Palace (dump).
Hyde Park
Kings Road / Fulham Road Chelsea

If you really have some time, take a one day trip to Oxford (take the Oxford Tube bus service) or Cambridge (take the express train from Kings Cross).
