It is really subjective but I found all of Bill Bryson's books entertaining. The good thing is that he has written lots so if you like his books, there are plenty more to read until you get bored.
I find that buying books from Amazon is a good plan as, the more you buy, the more suggestions they come up with as to what could also be interesting for you. They tend to suggest things in the same style as books you have bought before, eliminating the sensation of having run out of ideas when you have just finished a good book.

If you've never read them, Lord of the Rings.
Whoever suggested the library is right on track. I personally suggest either checking out the shelves of newly arrived books, or finding the classics section. My library has a section in the young adult area with a bunch of books on high school reading lists and such, and I'm always finding interesting things there. 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Catch 22 were all books I found there.

When I find a book I like and want to read similar ones I look up the book at Amazon. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see:
Listmania!
So you'd like to...
These are lists people put together that includes the book you like. I've often found other books I loved using this method.

If you want to go for one of the oldies but goodies, I recomend checking out "Catcher in the Rye" or " 9 Stories" by J.D. Salinger. "Women" by Bukowski is also great. If you want something so funny it will make you laugh out loud, read "Me Talk Pretty Some Day" by David Sedaris. Good Luck!
