We moved here in October, the garden had been fully landscaped and it was gorgeous. Our dog soon ruined it by running around on the grass in the rain and creating mud slides, and also digging to hide his bones! I'd say that 40% of the grass is now just muddy patches, and obviously I want to make it right again now summer is coming. I don't want to have to spend out on turf, especially seeing as it's not the whole garden, so was thinking grass seed might do it...but I don't know if this might make the grass look uneven, or whether it would even work!

The dog is no longer living with us, so there is no fear of it being ruined again...so how do we make it nice? And how long will it take?

The dog has gone to work in the police force. Hopefully he can put some of that digging to use !

Seed it, yourself or professional, don't do any treatments (such as broad leaf weed control or crabgrass control) til it can be mowed twice. It can take up to 3 month for grass to get a good root system devolped.

Once the grass has emerged, mow as you typically would, ( Do not bag, or rake your clipping, as these have vital nutrients and water in them) make sure you put a fert down every 45-60 days. Once your new grass can be mowed twice you can treat for any broadleaf weeds or grassy weeds that are present. i would then finish out the year with an aeration and one more overseeding.

I would use a grass seed mix that contains ryegras this is hard wearing, mix your seed in a bucket with a seed compost, make sure that the compost is neither wet nor dry and work out that you would need a fist full of seed to every square yard, leave the bucket to stand for three days, this will help to start the seed into growth.
Give your areas of mud a light dusting of seed / compost then rake to as to cover the bair ground.
Finaly cover the whole area with clear plastic and watch the seed germinate.

You need to get what they call Starter Fertilizer and use grass seed. DO it now while it is still somewhat cold and the ground is often wet. It will take until late spring right now to make it look really nice. Try to find out what type of sod was put down so you can best match the grass. Ask a pro which matches the best.

until finally it up with a shovel (dig up a shovel crammed with airborne dirt and airborne dirt and dust and turn it over) to a intensity of approximately 6 inches for the whole bald section. Then, use a steel rake to bust up the clumps and make the section soft. bypass get some grass seed and a bag of topsoil. unfold the seed out frivolously, to the place there is incredibly much a sturdy unmarried layer of seeds on the section. conceal this with a pair of million/4 inch of topsoil. Water the section a minimum of a pair circumstances an afternoon for a pair minutes at a time (to maintain it moist, so the seeds germinate). greater commonly if it rather is heat and dry out. Use an excellent spray to circumvent washing out the seeds. try this daily until the grass seedlings sprout (a pair of week). proceed watering, yet now merely as quickly as an afternoon for approximately 10 minutes. because of the fact the grass grows and the roots strengthen, water longer yet much less commonly. This encourages deep root strengthen for greater effective drought resistance. After some weeks, the grass would be long adequate to mow. by way of this time, you may desire to be right down to watering it 2 or three times a week, maximum, for approximately 20 minutes at a time. Your purpose is to get right down to a minimum of one watering a week for approximately an hour. To eco-friendly up the the remainder of the backyard, use Miracle Gro backyard food (stick to it with a hose sprayer for Miracle Gro) each coupla-few weeks (despite it says on the equipment). to regulate weeds, use a weed and feed fertilizer, or a sprig rather designed fo use on lawns. in case you get brown patches, yet you're watering many times, you have gotten an infestation of grubs or bugs that consume the grass roots. for this reason, you may get a backyard insecticide which you unfold onto the backyard. If the spot is very vast or the grass quite dies off, you may reseed those spots.

You will need to put seed down on the bald patches. It will grow just fine and will not look out of place with the rest of the lawn. Feed the whole lawn to get a lush green colour - the cheapest lawn feed is beer!! Just sprinkle it all over, it gets rid of lawn moss but feeds the grass. It will be looking good in no time. By the way, where's the dog gone????

Cut out the sections where the muddy patches are to the depth of the grass roots. Re-seed with a good quality seed and shield from any heavy rain until established and take care not to walk on it.

Hi there,
Grass seed will work fine. Best to buy from a seed merchant though, rather than the boxes sold in garden centres. They will advise you of the best for your needs.
Look out on Freecycle.org for persons in your area who have spare turf to recycle, this time of year is just right. I asked last year and got enough spare turf to returf my front garden for free.

Grass seed should do it, along with treatment with a product such as this: http://www.ahsdirect.co.uk/product/154/72

I also recommend purchasing a copy of "The Lawn Expert" by D.G. Hessayon (£7.99)
