when they can focus on something more productive? why not make harsher punishments for rapeists and molesters and killers. or how about a law makeing it manditory for 6 months of engament before you can get married? that might lower the divorce rate.

Well a lot of things aren't going well for Bush and the Republicans, so they have to find at least one issue per election that will rile up the hateful to try to distract us from their disastrous decisions and messes like the Iraqi civil war, their loss of the House, Republican scandals (Foley and DeLay), bin Laden still running around, Rumsfeld's incompetence, Cheney's connection to Halliburton, Cheney's staff Libby being convicted...probably the pardon of Libby...so gay marriage is a great tool for Bush's handler Rove to use to get people freaked out about something that doesn't affect the majority of Americans daily lives one iota...

It's just political hacks, eager to feed at the public trough, sucking up to noisy voting blocs.

Oh, believe me, they make the laws against some crimes as harsh as they can: One man just got an automatic, mandatory 200 years, without parole, for purchasing kiddie porn on-line. It's called shooting fish in a barrel: some crimes are easy to solve and prosecute, so the CJS plays those up like the crime of the century and downplays the unsolved murders and rapes (of which there are now bound to be more--why not? the penalty is the same, so what's the perp's motivation not to kill the only witness?).

The whole government game is to do as little as possible while pretending to do a lot. Haven't you ever been in a restaurant where everyone seems to run back and forth all the time, but somehow the food never gets served and the tables never get bussed, and your water glass never gets filled? Same idea.

Maybe we should require a license to have kids. That would solve a lot of problems.

The government represents the people and every state which has voted on it has voted to protecting the traditional definition of marriage. The people have spoken and continue to speak. They don't want the definition of marriage to be changed inorder to conform to the whims of the gay community. Perhaps gays should go for some other form of acknowledgement of their relationships.

To keep us from questioning the numerous idiotic issues the government is involved in.
If we keep our eyes on the issue of gay rights and continue to fight against one another within the country, we won't be likely to expend energy fighting the government on the bigger issues.
BTW, it isn't just gay rights that are being violated. The deeper issues have to do with ANYONE who is living together outside of legalized marriage.

The government does not. The government is just the machine by which the people steer.
it is not the government pushing to protect traditional values...it is special interests.
Just like the government is not behind pushing for gay marriage or special privileges for gays...it is special interests and lobby groups.
I suggest you educate yourself about government before you make accusations.

Why do we look towards politicians to guide our life?

The more people are willing to give their lives over to politicians, the more politicians will run your life for you. Still people clamor for politicians to take care of their health, plan their retirement, give us an education, job, home, tell us who we can marry......

Yet, politicians still find the time to sign bills like the defense of marriage act into law.

I doubt most people today could define what freedom is.

do you realize what the government would go through if they enforced gay rights? Do you remember anything about the civil rights movement? riots, killings, burning of houses, and all the fighting they had to do and nothing still came out of it............insurance companies would die before they allowed 2 women to be on the same car, medical, etc plan........banks would stroke when all of us came in to add our partner to our accounts, and the irs how would they tax us.......personally I think there would be lots of scammers out there......so even if it were legal to be married and afforded all the luxuries of the married ppl, the government would find some way to keep it somewhat illegal..................there is too much conservativism now maybe when our generation is running the country, we can
