(Really dirty water!) Is this the end of the world? What's happening? What can I do that won't involve calling a plumber?

The best thing to do is call out a company that specializes in drain line cleaning. I have tried different drain line chemicals but always ended up calling some one out to clean the lines. The last time I paid $162.50 and it was worth every bit of it.

You have a plugged sewer line. You can get a sewer snake from a hardware store and try to clear the plug yourself or you can call a plumber to bring in a bigger snake. If you're lucky, like I was, you can call the city utilities to fix the plug because it was in the city line, not my house line. Your house should have a clean-out lid somewhere between your house and the city line. open it and if the water spills out from there, then chances are the plug is in the city line. If the clean-out pipe is clear, then the plug is upstream from there, or in other words, in your house line and it is your responsibility, not the city. The hardware snakes usually only go about 25 feet. If the plug is righ under the bathroom, then your snake should be able to reach it. Otherwise, you will have to call the plumber and pay about $100 for the privilege of having them visit you. the repair may be additional on top of that appearance fee.
Best wishes.

you need a professional. It could be very very dangerous to you. If your line is clogged you are not getting the proper draw and venting in your system and could be allowing dangerous, yes dangerous sewer gas back into your house. It will suprise you to know that you wont really smell it either.
I had this happen to me, we were getting ill and not knowing why when the system just stopped working. When the plumber came out and tried to fix it, the tree in our yard required having the entire line replaced.
Dont wait, and make sure you use bleach to clean the back up and try running water slowely to rinse it back down.

You can rent a 250 foot snake and do it yourself.
I wouldn't.
The plug is between house and the drain outside in the yard.

It sounds like a septic tank issue. Call someone to come clean it out.
