My Mom has the beginning stages of emphysema and the Doctor told her that it will be full blown with a year time. The Doctor says she need to quit right now. Can anyone tell me about the nicotine patches because she would like to know more about them? (She smoke over 2 packs a day) She also have difficulty in swallowing, could that be part of the emphysema too?

these patches are sold over the counter; the doctor should have given her a course of action to follow to quit - to tell her what is available, proven etc; the bottom line is it takes willpower; I use to picture the cigarettes as a ball and chain and one day I said that's it , I am quitting ; I wanted to be able to get up in the morning and sit outside in the sun and watch the birds without have to fall out of bed and grab a cigarette before my eyes were even opened; and it worked , some 21 years now since I smoked but it is hard; you could post notes ; no smoking Mom ; we love you ; love your yourself more than you love the cigarettes ; don't let them steal you away from us; love conquers a lot including nicotine addiction;

Hello, I am a respiratory therapy student and we have covered emphysema recently. try going to www.drugs.com and look up what ever drug you are wanting to know. i went there to find many different drugs for my classes and it helped me out a lot. also you said she smoked 2 packs a day this is how the docs see that if she smoked 2 packs a day for 10 years it would be see as 20 pack years. it is important that she stop smoking asap. the sooner she stops the better off she will be; she may even be able to control it if it is stopped soon enough. i hope this helps.

Emphysema is a disease that takes a long time in coming and several books report that it is irreversible. The discomfort involved in giving up smoking cold turkey will far outway the discomfort if the disease worsens.
One book offers suggested therapies that may make life easier with emphysemia, and these include protein powder, flaxseed, antioxidants vitamins C and E, Selenium and CoQ10, Taurine, Magnesium, Carnitine and carotines.
As your Mum already has medical advice I would suggest that she discusses taking any of these with her doctor to ensure that she takes the right amounts for her.

Hi Kelly! How great it is that you're checking in for your mom. If the doctor gives you the stop smoking immediately sign - it's time to stop. He probably didn't recommend the patch either (she'll still be taking in nicotine). Tell her it's time to stop cold turkey. I've also heard hypnosis work (if you can find that in your area). Good luck... you're a good daughter (so don't you EVER smoke!).

theres something you can get. it puts a laser in your ear and makes you not crave cigarettes anymore. my dad did it and after 20 years of two packs a day he doesn't smoke. you can also go to a hypnotist[sp?] but that procedure works best. ask your doctor abou tit.
