It is a letter you put in a cover :) Seriously, though, it is a letter that goes with a resume. It tells your prospective employer all the nice things you want to say about yourself and your prospective employer that you can't say in a resume. Basically, it says you kick @$$ as a potential employee and that the prospective emplyer is the greatest thing since sliced bread and if they don't hire you they'll be losing out BAD, so hurry up and get the interview done, like NOW!

A cover letter introduces you to the human resources people. It tells them a little about you, your goals and hopes, how you think you can add to the company, what you bring with you and how you prefer to work (alone or with team). Any discrepecies in the application should be addressed such as: I am moving to the Atlanta area in May and am looking to be working as soon as possible. This would explain your Minnesota address (for an example only).

It's an introductory letter sent with your resume. There you can give a personalized touch about your overall resume and skills. It's good to include info usually not on your resume. You don't need to repeat yourself. I'd say use this letter to "catch their attention", so that your resume is even more appealing.

Good luck!

It's a brief letter that you write to accompany your resume, which introduces you to the company and explains why your qualifications are a match for the position the company is advertising.

It's a concise preview for you to toot your horn a little more in depth than the fact sheet of your resume.

It also lets the company know you did your resarch on them and why you want to be part of their team (if you are wise enough to include this)

No more than 4 paragraphs.

Simply put, it's a brief overview of why YOU are the right one for the job, and is designed to "peak my interest" and get me to look at your resume.

It tells me what job you're looking for, briefly discusses your background, skills, and experience, and makes me want to look at your resume for more details.
