The topic of this really caught my attention. I have to go with Venice here - there's a little more information needed here.

Are these part of the fin, or something "attached" to the fin? Is this the tail only, or other fins (top fin = dorsal, single fin in back on bottom = anal, paired nearest gills = pectoral, paired between pectoral & anal = pelvic).

Also, if you have a digital camera, you could post a photo here using a photo sharing website like photobucket. Maybe seeing this would help us answer your question.

ADDITION: Okay, on the dorsal & anal fins. Maybe you have an anchorworm infestation (a parasite). See this link for a photo of one and treatment info: http://www.fishdeals.com/fish_diseases/anchor_worms/

If this isn't it, post another edit.

What fins are you talking about? Part of the distinctive features of swordtails are their "sword" tails. And in lyretails, they have two points coming off of their tail fin. Whatever fin you are wondering about, I'm sure that this is part of their fin growth process. Perhaps you have a juvenile male that is starting to grow his distinctive tail sword.
