Contracted former indie talents usually spend some time in one or both of the developmental feds to learn to wrestle WWE's style. Take, for example, CM Punk. Watch pretty much any of his matches from ROH, FIP, IWA, BCW, whatever. They're intrinsically different from how he wrestles now, for WWE. Some would argue (and I'd be one of them) that he didn't need a year and a half to "learn WWE's style," but that's the reason DSW exists and OVW is contracted with WWE. Some wrestlers spend little or no time in the developmentals. Paul London wrestled one match for OVW and was then brought up to Smackdown. When Jamie Noble was brought back in after a year and a half on the indies, he didn't spend any time in OVW or DSW. After the tryout Mistico had last month, it was pretty well indicated that he'd be brought on the main roster ASAP, if he can get out of his contract with CMLL. So no, you don't HAVE to got to DSW or OVW, but most do.

Well if they like you very much and think you have ability, they might put you on Velocity or Heat. Only on rare chances does the WWE find someone magnificent enough to put onto RAW or Smackdown!.
