A surname is the family name as opposed to the names for each person in the family. It depends on your culture as to whether it is the first name or last name. In USA, Surname generally indicates the last name. Example: George Washington - his family name was Washington and it was his last name.
This question is in the Royalty Category. Royalty sometimes have their royal names and their everyday names (my terminology!).
