For the last couple years I've been tossing around the idea of starting my own soap making business. My big concern is that someone will develop a terrible rash from something I make and sue me. How do companies manage this sort of thing?

Most of company will have disclaimer on the package of their products. That will protect you little. Most of business insurance will cover limited amount of legal loss.

Make your business as a corporation. (Closed corp, or S corp) It won't cost you that much, but it will protect your personal asset. In this case, you and business are different identity; in worst case, you will loose all your investment on that business. Nothing else.
