You are right, it is hard. Do I chose one for all genres or one for each? I like different poems and poets for different times of day and different moods.
I will give you my several I think should be candidates:
1.Langston Hughes
2.Edgar Allen Poe
3. Lord Byron
4.William Butler Yeats
5.Ralph Waldo Emerson
6. William Wordsworth

I don't think there is an answer, just as there isn't one best song or movie or novel in the world. People's taste is too widely varied and poetry is too subjective of an art form. I could say Shakespeare or Milton or Donne or Frost or Cummings... but I know at least one person who can't stand every one of those writers.
For me, it has to be Dean Young. I could never get tired of reading "First Course in Turbulence", or any of his other collections.

I feel Edgar Allen Poe is the greatest poet. His poems show diversity, just as his stories do. They can inspire fear, or love. Some of his stories are even poetic. Flanders Cottage, for example.

Either Robert Frost or Graeme Base. Technically Graeme Base is an author, not a poet, but all of his books are in rhyme. (My favourite is "The Sign of the Seahorse".) But if you want "traditional" poets, you can't beat Frost.

Honestly? I think Shel Silverstein. His poems are just fun, no strings attached.
