if the secret is damaging to others if you don't tell, but the person told you in confidence?

Let the person who told you the secret know you're conflicted and that you think they should come clean. If the person with the secret cares about you at all, they'll understand your position. And if it really came down to it, decide which party you'd rather be loyal to. It may be a crappy secret to have to hold in, but if it were a best friend or a family member who told it to you, maybe consider that your role to them includes keeping things quiet sometimes.

Then again, honesty can be quite liberating and you know you've done the right thing.

Great, now i'm conflicted too and it's not even my secret. . .

It really depends on how damaging it is, to whom...
I would like more details about what type of damage it would cause others.

Because it is a way of warning someone else without giving out too much details.

I think that ultimately if it will physically hurt the person, then you will always have a guilty conscience, knowing that it was something that you could have done to prevent this from happening.

Talk to the person that told you the secret in confidence as well, and try and get them to look at whatever they told you in a different way.

Its all about morals... for instance if the person told you they were going to shoot up the school or bomb something, then tell.

If the persons secret is just emotionally damaging to others, I would not say anything. If it is against the law and harmful to others and you don't tell you could be in just as much trouble as the person who committed the crime, if you are caught knowing.

I hope this helps I really cant give you a very good response not really knowing what the secret is.

Why would you agree to keep secret about something that is damaging to others?

How damaging is the secret?

How many people are affected?

If the secret was really damaging to others then I would give priority to others over keeping the secret. I believe the welfare of others is more important than keeping a secret.

If u let out this secret, and it prevents someone from getting hurt , then i guess its worth blurting out.
Weigh the 2 hurts. The hurt u will cause to the one who told u his secret against the hurt it will cause the X person, person in question.
Anything thats life threatening, shouldnt be kept back as a secret.U will be doing the said person a favor.

That is a tough situation. However, once you weigh the outcome if the secret could cause serious trouble for someone if you do not tell, i think that you should tell it. After all, you do not have to reveal where it came from. All you have to say is that you were asked to keep it between the two of you but you thought that this person should know and you are not going to tell where it came from.

The secret would probably be more damaging if it remain a secret. Example: you know that your best friend's significant other is cheating on them. While yes, the safe route would be to stay quiet, your friend will not only be mad at their significant other when they find out, but they'll be mad at you for not telling them.

Well unless the secret is going to cost someone their life. As in the secret you were told is that, that person is going to kill someone then you should tell. However, if is something minor than only you can decide that for yourself. What ever decision you make, make sure it isn't one you'll regret!!!!

If someone told me a secret that would hurt the other person, I defiantly will tell them, they do need to know, because I would want someone to warn me.
