A ballad usually is a poem that tells a story and can be sung. The speaker does not give too much detail about his own feelings or background information such as the setting or time. Ballads were traditionally oral literature, told to illiterate or semi-illiterate people. They have many repetitions, most of them have a chorus, helping people to remember them. There is a difference in traditional ballads such as "The Streets of Laredo (or The Cowboy's Lament)" and literary ballads written by poets like Sir William Scott. Most American ballads were brought into the country by English and Scottish settlers and changed over time.
A ballad has a certain meter and rhyme scheme. Usually the meter is x/x/x/x/ and the rhyme scheme is abba (if I remember right). So much for technical details. Try to write about something that really moved you or if you can think about anybody who did a very heroical thing, use this. Maybe you write about soldiers, going to war, leaving their families behind, etc. Or even something historical. Good Luck!

write about something you like. if you like cars, compose one about cars. if you like star wars, do star wars. just do something you're passionate about.
