It was absolutely Harry Chapin, NOT Jim Croce. Although Jim Croce has a similar sound. Harry Chapin also sang TAXI. Jim Croce sang Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Operator, Have to Say I love You in a Song among others. Cat Stevens sang Moonshadow, Peace Train and Wild World among others, NOT Cat's in the Cradle- people think that just because his name is Cat.

Singer/songwriter Harry Chapin made a solid career out of essentially setting short stories to music. His most popular tracks were "Taxi" (#24), "W.O.L.D." (#34), "Cats in the Cradle" (#1), and "Sequel" (#23), which was a follow up to the story in "Taxi." Chapin's music possessed a folksy intimacy, further enhanced by the stirring chamber-style string work. His voice, while limited, conveyed the sincerity of his feelings. Chapin did put his money where is mouth was, devoting much of his time and income to aid the hungry and socially disenfranchised. During his career, he raised over five million dollars for various causes. Chapin died in an auto accident on July 16, 1981, while on his way to do a benefit.

The Cat in the Cradle was written by Harry Chapin.....(lyrics by Sandra Chapin)....

It was Harry Chapin in the 70's who sang the original. Then in the 90's Ugly Kid Joe redid it.
