"The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States regarding the Soviet deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba. The missiles were ostensibly placed to protect Cuba from further planned attacks by the United States after the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, and were rationalized by the Soviets as equivalent to the U.S. placing deployable nuclear warheads in the United Kingdom, Italy, and most significantly, Turkey.
The crisis began on October 16, 1962 when U.S. reconnaissance imagery revealing Soviet nuclear missile installations on the island were shown to U.S. President John F. Kennedy and ended twelve days later on October 28, 1962, when Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev announced that the installations would be dismantled. The Cuban Missile Crisis is often regarded as the moment when the Cold War came closest to escalating into a nuclear war. Russians refer to the event as the "Caribbean Crisis," while Cubans refer to it as the "October Crisis."

The only one I have learned about in school.
The october crisis, in october 1962. President JFK's National Security people discovered nuclear missile installations in Cuba, after the failed bay of pigs invasion, during the cold war. JFK demanded from Nikita Krushchev, the Soviet premier, the missile installations be removed.
The Soviets said the US had installations in Italy, England, and in Turkey. Closest they came to a nuclear conflict, to my knowledge.

The closest the world has ever been to a nuclear conflict after the savage destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred during the Cuban Crisis. US ships attacked a Soviet submarine which was set up to counter attack with nuclear missiles had Russian commander not intervened to stop the launch. Nuclear War is today as possible as ever because the hair trigger set up by nuclear powers make us ever more susceptible to an accidental nuclear attack, countered by massive nuclear counter attacks.
Nonetheless, it is not appropriate to narrow it down to events but to policy. The policy which brought us closest to nuclear war was Eisenhower's flawed conviction that deterrence was an economical and effective defense policy. More bang for the buck also means less reliable defense systems, less accuracy and higher risks of making the planet uninhabitable.
