Diamond is formed by a gaint macromolecule of carbon atoms arranged in an 3-dimensional octahedral shape by forming compact covalent bonds while carbon atoms in graphite form flat layers which are arranged in parallel, one above the other a crystal lattice with a basic 2-dimensional hexagonal units forming parallel layers.

In diamond, each C atom is joined to 4 others in a tetrahedral arrangement.

In graphite, there are layers of hexagons, in which each C atom is joined to 3 others. There are weak bonds between the flat layers of hexagons.
