Sometimes lawyers will give you one free visit, or you can get cheap legal advice by joining some group (we get limited free legal advice through a program with my husband's employer for $14/month). Consider asking a lawyer.

I'm assuming you are guilty and wonder when you can stop looking over your shoulder. I think you have confidentiality with your lawyer--that is, he can't report what you said. That should be your first question, though. Even then, I'd hedge: "Suppose someone did ___ on (date). When would they be free from risk of prosecution?" Ask for the reference of the law so you can check it out (after all, it's your [presumably] freedom at stake, not theirs).

The specific period varies with the crime.

You can check the laws yourself by going to the state website.
