Estimated casualties for the battle:

Greeks
-300 Spartans
-700 Thespians
-1,400 Greek allies in total

Persians
-20,000 (Modern estimate)
-20,000 (Herodotus' estimate)
-80,000 (Ctesias' estimate)

Considering that the Spartans had allies who helped, we can't give them total credit for all ~20,000 of those inflicted casualties, but more likely than not, a very significant percentile were Spartan kills/wounds.

No one knows the real amount of Persian deaths in Thermopylae. Even mar m (the guy who said 15,352). Modern estimates say around 20,000-25,000 Persians died in the battle. The that means that 1 in every 10,000 Persians died in Thermopylae. Forgive me if I did the math wrong. And there wasn't only 300 Greeks at Thermopylae. There were an estimated 5,200 Greek soldiers. There were 300 Spartans but with other Greek allies this is the most likely number in the Spartan alliance.

As many as 20,000 Persians were killed by the Greek forces. The actual amount that was killed by the Spartans themselves is not known, as the Greek forces did not consist just of three-hundred Spartans. The coalition actually had about 7,000 Hoplites, but did not spare any more than 300 as an advance guard, because of an upcoming festival.

obviously not to many people have read "the histories", by Herodotus. you should all go to the library and read that book, and stop asking stupid people stupid questions.

"completley wiped out leaving a clear path for Persia to take Athens." BlueLizard, are you an idiot? The primary goal of the 300 and their 6400 allied troops was to buy time for a larger Greek army to mobilize, and also to keep the Persian army from overtaking the Greek naval ports. The Persian navy suffered a horrible loss due to this.

the 6 day delay caused by the 300 saved Greece and pretty much the rest of the western world. Read people...read.

We can't really tell for sure there was only 300 Spartans but I think the entire force blocking the Persian's path was up to like 7000. I believe Persia lost an estimated 20000 soldiers and we all know the force opposing them was completley wiped out leaving a clear path for Persia to take Athens.

no accurate answer to that question, but i think the 300 Spartans
made a huge damage to the Persian army. Aside from that, they were able to buy some time for the greek army to gather.

I agree with the many of the above posters and modern estimates are between 20,000 and 25,000. Which is real impressive considering how outnumbered they were as modern estimates have the Persian army between 1 and 2 million.

The true numbers can never be known for sure. It is easier to tell how many Greeks were at the battle because of their record keeping and historical writings. Anyway, try the link. It is a VERY GOOD read:

20,000 in the Persian army were killed, but many of those were mercenaries of Greek origin.
