Install the drivers first, during installation of the drivers you may be prompted to connect the web cam, after that it should go swimmingly, if your not prompted to connect the web cam, just follow the install prompts to completion, connect the web cam and windows should install it for you, eg, found new hardware should appear, after a little time you should see a balloon pop up to say "hardware installed successfully and ready to use" Good luck.

Some webcams need XP to recginise that they are there. To chect this go into control panel in classic view and add new hardware. Start the wizard and it will display a list of all hardware that has been connected but not installed. If it is not on this list then it has been installed.
To check that it is the web-conference software go into windows movie maker. On the file menu click on capture a dialogue box should appear. If you camera is not on this then the camera is faulty or corrupt. If it is on this then the software you are using is faulty. I suggest using microsoft netmeeting.

You need to install the drivers for your webcam.

It should have come with an install disc for it,

IF it didn't you can go to the cameras manufacturer's website and download the drivers

Since you didn't give us a Make & Model of the webcam, I can't send you the exact link.

Did you get a disk with your webcam? Try running and installing the webcam program from the disk first.
