No, not on that basis. Prematurity does not make a child eligible for SSI, and while SSI may be paid to a child with low birth weight, or low birth weight for gestational age, 4 lb 8 oz does not qualify. (Specifically, a child may qualify for immediate payments on the basis of presumptive disability based on low birth weight, if the child weighed less than 1200 grams at birth, or, less than 2000 grams but was small for gestational age. 1200 grams is roughly 3.2 lbs, and 2000 grams is more than 5 pounds. At 32 weeks, a baby weighing 4 lb 8 oz is definitely not small for gestational age.)

Getting SSI has nothing to do with the child being premature. There are so many preemies that grow up to be healthy, successful adults. In order to get SSI, your child must have some type of disability that will interfere with normal child development. Prematurity is not considered a disability.

That alone is not enough. If the child suffers a physical or mental disability because of that or anything else, then they would most likely qualify...it is a long process and doctors and any key players in your child's life are involved, also there are income limits for you and/or your spouse that can't be exceeded...
