My experience with Chesapeakes is that they are more territorial than labs. I was bitten by a Chesapeake Retriever at a campsite once. The owner's other dog, an elderly Collie, had gotten away while the owners were on a walk with the Chesapeake. As I was returning the Collie to the site, the owners came back with the Chesapeake on a leash. He seemed calm right next to its master, but while we were talking he suddenly jumped into action and took a little chunk out of my palm. Although the owners swore this never happened before I suspected it had. If you are looking for more of a guardian and "serious" dog I would say Chesapeake is the way to go - as this one proved quite territorial. But of course every dog's behavior can be blamed on it's owner. Regardless, I would encourage anyone to rescue a dog from a shelter. I have a wonderfully behaved, rescued, lab/newfie mix.

Lived with labs and been around Chesapeake Retrievers, like them both a lot. They are both great dogs and very similar in temperament and energy. I'd have to choose based on the individual dog not really the breed to pick a favorite of the 2.

Check out www.dogbreedinfo.com to look at them both and compare the differences.

I like Chesapeake retrievers better than Labs because labs tend to be a little bit more "stupid" and they tend to gain weight easier.

I like Golden retrievers the best, they are just so cuddly!
