I don't have a textbook for this and no I don't really want "Rome wasn't built in a day" type thing.

The legendary story is that it was founded by Romulus in 753 B.C.. In reality, there is evidence predating Romulus by at least a thousand years, well back into Neolithic times. Romulus was a real person as far as being the first king of Rome, the first of a line of seven that would last until 509 B.C., which is when the Roman Republic was founded.

According to legend, the city of Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus on April 21, 753 BC. Archaeological evidence supports claims that Rome was inhabited since the 8th century BC and earlier. To get a full understanding of the story of how rome was built, try looking up Roman Mythology. I know it sounds crazy, but that is the only written record from that far back. Atleast that I have found in the past.

If by the term "built" you mean the establishment of a government that continued into the historical period, the answer is some time in the 8th century. But if you are wondering when the buildings that constituted the core of Rome's civic ensemble during, say, the 1st century BCE, were constructed, the answer is, at a variety of different times. Just as in the present, we are occasionally destroying old buildings to construct new ones, the same happened in the ancient world. The first buildings were of wood and would have to be replaced from time to time. When population and wealth became more concentrated, importance civic and cultic buildings were built of stone. Wherever you look in Rome, the building on the site is unlikely to have been the first building constructed on that site -- it would have been preceded by numerous others.

ROME (AP) -- Legend has it that Rome was founded in 753 B.C. by Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of Mars, the god of war, who were suckled as infants by a she-wolf in the woods.

Now, archaeologists believe they have found evidence that at least part of that tale may be true: Traces of a royal palace discovered in the Roman Forum have been dated to roughly the period of the eternal city's legendary foundation.

Andrea Carandini, a professor of archaeology at Rome's Sapienza University who has been conducting excavations at the Forum for more than 20 years, said he made the discovery over the past month at the spot where the Temple of Romulus stands today.

It is next to the Sanctuary of Vesta -- the Roman goddess of the hearth -- just outside the Palatine walls, site of the earliest traces of civilization in Rome.

Where previously archaeologists had only found huts dating to the 8th century B.C., Carandini and his team unearthed traces of regal splendor: A 3,700-square-foot palace, 1,130 square feet of which were covered and the rest courtyard. There was a monumental entrance, and elaborate furnishings and ceramics.

we know for sure that Rome is by far older than the legends of Romulus. i would say its about 3000 (1000BC) years old, it would have started as a small settlement and gradually grew to a city because of its location. i personally have searched on the net quite a lot, nearly all of them say that it was founded in 753BC. but during this time they already had a king, an army and a complete civilization, so it must be a lot older than that, or they could have settled their as a colony where they had everything with them and just settled. if you really want to find out, you should go to a library or a place that keeps records of ancient history. i my self am planning on visiting Rome in the summer, hopefully i will get my answer for that question too.
