I've heard people say that daylight savings time increases the amount of time spent awake during sunlight, thereby decreasing energy usage. However, if this is the case, why not make daylight savings time permanent?

The period of daylight and night varies according to the seasons and the latitude. For example at 40°N latitude there are:
+ 9.21 hours of light on Jan 1
+ 11.02 hours of light on Mar 1
+ 14.63 hours of light on June 1
+ 12.92 hours of light on Sept 1.

If you know your latitude and longitude, you can calculate the time of sunrise and sunset with this calculator:

Obviously DST does not change the length of the day, but the longer days nearer the summer solstice offer more opportunity to shift apparent daylight from morning to evening so that early morning daylight is not wasted. Energy conservation has often been used to justify DST. Artificially delaying sunrise and sunset tends to increase electricity usage in the morning and reduce it in the evening. Savings occur if the evening reduction outweighs the morning increase.

Daylight savings time started during the World War 2 era to conserve energy... less electricity is used during the day, and having an extra hour of daylight means using less electricity in the evening...

When all is said and done, the only real "purpose" of daylight "savings" time is to move daylight around. A famous bumper sticker once said, "The Difference Between Dark and Hard is it Stays Dark All Night." So maybe it would be better to adopt Hardness Savings Time.

Daylight savings time is stupid. Just a way for the government to control us like little lemmings. the energy savings aren't worth waking up for.
