The swan certainly. In England swans are royal birds and no doubt King Henry VIII ate a few of these.

In Tudor times, birds were not so much shot out of the sky but hunted using hawks - the most favoured hunting bird being the British Peregrine Falcon, which can reach speeds approaching 300mph in a stoop.

What other birds then? Sky larks since these figure in poetry and prose of the Tudor period.

So far we have three types of birds which would have graced the table of an Earl a Lord or even the King.

1. Swan [special events]
2. Pigeons [killed by the Peregrine Falcon]
3. Sky larks [captured in nets in the open fields]

By the way, if you get to London and want to see a Peregrine Falcon - stop over in Trafalgar Square. The falconer is there most days. His job is to keep the pigeons out of the square. What do Peregrine Falcon's eat? Pigeons.

Please note that the 'common' people in Tudor times ate a diet consisting mainly of vegetables which were served up in a dish called 'pottage'. The vegetables being stewed in a stock of fish or meat.

At Hampton Court where King Henry VIII spent much of his time, sporting and revelling, the diet of the nobility averaged some 5000 calories per day. The people were not fat however, since they spent much of their time at daily sport - hunting etc.

Pork pies were popular at Hampton Court. If you go there you can still buy Hampton Court Elder Berry wine, popular in Tudor times and still made there today. About £7 per bottle. Also at Hampton Court they have a fully working Tudor kitchen. See if you can find it on-line.

A rich Tudor would eat the more rare things like Swan, skylarks and Woodcock. I am guessing.

The only person who could have a swan killed was the Monarch so ordinary rich Tudors wouldn't have that. They would have duck, pheasant, quail and chicken.

Pheasant, Swan, Dove, Goose, Chicken, and Pigeon would all be acceptable on the table, the exact choice would depend on the meal, the occasion, the preparation, and whether or not it was a holiday or not.

lol. Now this is one hell of question.

I assume you're referring to the Tudor dynasty (you should have capitalized it but oh well)

I'll say one would be duck. I am not an expert by any means so I would love to see the answer to this one.

Hi there. Swan, goose, duck. Add pigeon, duck and pheasant if you like. Mostly though, if it could be caught they would eat it!
Cheers, steve.
