This is a dumb question, but when you install a new CD-ROM drive in a computer (XP) can you then use it to run the cdrom that came with the new drive to install the device driver?

what confuses me is this: why do i need to install the software on the disc for the new cdrom drive- how can it read the the disk and since it is able to read it, why do i need to install it- i dunno

Yes, although XP should find and either install a driver or ask you for the Driver disc for the drive
