Like all camelids (camels and their relatives) they have had long necks for as far back as we have evidence. The long necks may have made it easier for the ancestral relatives to reach up high for tender shoots on trees, or it may have made it easier for the ancestral relatives to see farther for predators, or possibly for some other reason I can't think of. Just because a trait is useful for some purpose now doesn't mean that purpose is why it originally arose.

While I'm not entirely sure, I'd wager it has something to do with being better able to eat the vegetation in their native climate that other animals can't get to, much like the giraffe.

so that they can reach the leaves on the trees that they like
they kept stretching their necks for millions of years so that each generation had a longer neck.

So they can see over the sheep (j/k)
Their legs are also long, so the neck must be long enough to reach their grazing!
