or is it the other way around? I figure one has to be popular before they'll turn it into the other. Just curious.

It depends on a few factors...
Movies, such as "Spirited Away" by Studio Ghibli, are animated first, and then there are spin off movies from popular Anime series (think, Pokemon).
Now, TV series, can come from manga, or be original, which is less frequent (see further for examples), but another area anime may come from is Video Games, and there are a lot of them! "Sakura Wars" is one of my favorite Anime, and it originated as a game.
Also, some anime come from novels actually. For example, a popular series, "Full Metal Panic" actually was from a novel first then made into anime and manga form.
There are popular Anime, "Noir" and "Madlax" which are first Anime from the creative studio "Bee Train".
Hope that helps!

Most of the time anime comes from the manga. And from this comes the game. Of course, there are some mangas that come from animes, like Princess Tutu. Their are some animes that never became mangas, like Nanoha, and mangas that never became animes, like Demon Diary. And the storylines can be very different or close to the same. It just depends on the series, really.

It's usually the manga, then the anime. The reason is simple: mass producing a manga is far less expensive than producing an anime. Creators and TV agents want shows that they know will be popular on TV.

A lot of times yes. Like everyone says, but there have been incidents were they have come from live-action shows first. They tend to root back to manga to though. NANA was a manga, then a live-action movie, then an anime. Same for Deathnote.

In most cases, yes, the manga is first. But in some cases, especially recently, a manga is made based on a popular anime series. I think the "Wolf's Rain" manga is one.

Almost always... just like most of our movies come from books, and the books are better... most anime comes from manga, and the manga is usually always better.

it goes both ways. But it is generally printed for first then animated later. This is a much cheaper way of judging interest in the story. Making movies is expensive.
