My job is about to be eliminated, I am single and relatively young (mid 30s), and have lived in the same place (metro NYC) for most of my life. For a variety of reasons I don't like my life here anymore, especially since most of the people I know have started familes. I am really comfortable with uprooting myself and going to a place where I don't know anyone, but I hate my current situation. Where should I go? Serious answers only please...

Meant to say I am NOT really comfortable moving to a new place where i don't know anyone...but it's better than living in this place.

The first time we left NYC, we went to Vegas--where we spent nine years. It was the mid-80s through mid-90s, and much less crowded in Vegas than it is now. Rents were very much cheaper than in NY--and if one did want to pay a lot of rent, it would be a place that had covered parking, a pool, tennis courts +++--or it would be an entire house. We only knew one person who lived there--and saw very little of that person due to the difference in hours everyone worked.
We're not big gamblers--I wouldn't advise the state of Nevada to anyone who could become addicted to gambling. We saw people come with new cars, and go back home with nothing.
Bullhead City, AZ and Laughlin, NV is another place I like--much smaller than Vegas, but all the amnenities. Multi-plexes inside the casinos, the Colorado River makes it more special.
Tucson's a great place--in the winter. For example, it has been around 80 degrees for a couple of weeks. In the summer, however, the temperatures can exceed 117 degrees. It, too, is much more crowded than when we arrived here in 1997.
I love the Lewis and Clark Valley in Idaho/Washington. The two states that form this valley are connected by a small draw bridge. Easy access to other points in both Idaho and Washington, and also Oregon. It's a small city(ies) Lewiston, Id, and Clarkston, WA--but it has everything one needs (a mall, Walmart, banks, fancy restaurants, fast foods, supermarkets, movies jobs of various kinds, etc.). There is boating, fishing, camping, and access to places with white water rafting, etc.
I still know a lot of people in NY (though they've moved upstate or to Long Island), and may visit soon--but I would not live among the crowds any more.

Being in my early 30's, my best answer to you is mid west or out west. It is so much different than here but at the same time just as lively and trendy as NYC. Arizona is beautiful and so is California. I think there is also a website called "myspot.com" where you can go on, plug in some requirements about what you are looking for demographic wise and it spits out a whole bunch of cities that meet your criteria. Good luck!!

The grass always looks greener on the other side! Where ever you go, remember there will be challenges and less than perfect situations but I bet the air will be cleaner! I hope to move to Florida soon for college. Michigan is still in a recession financially and the gray days here are abundant and depressing.

Research different places. No one can tell you where to go because only you know what you are looking for. I would look for places that offer what you like. If you want to be near a city move in that area. If you are looking to settle down then move where there are single women in abundance and somewhere where you can get a job. No girls wants an unemployed guy.

I have found there's usually a plethora of jobs surrounding large military bases. These generally pay more than usual, but cost of living often can be higher as well. If you don't want to go too far, try the DC area. Cost of living should be comparable to NYC, but job variety and availability should be better.
I wish you well!

Well, you didn't say whether you wanted to stay in the USA, but I think Europe or Brazil are the best places to live in. As a single American you would easily find a gorgeous wife and live a very nice life there.

First you should figure out if you are leaving for the rite reasons, It sounds like you just need to talk to someone maybe even get to know a nice lady friend. The cost to move could be expensive. Especially if you have to move back.

I would say the northwest or Midwest.
Don't move to Cali unless you like paying 3.50 for a gallon of gas and 1,300 for a studio apartment. Trust me I live here. Cali is over rated.

Oklahoma City or Tulsa. Both are growing and offer a wide variety of high paying jobs.
