You are ABSOLUTELY correct.
I say it's because the vast majority of people simply can't understand that urge. So we hear about "the protestant work ethic" or "society is more important than the individual". If everybody still lived in tribes in the woods or even alone in the woods, it wouldn't make one tiny lick of difference to the universe.

Also an old hippie and a rebel (thanks for the reminder) and I lived in the most remote, hot, arid, rugged wilderness, on the planet (the Chihuahuan Desert and Sierra Madres), for 13 years. Temps often reached into the 110-120's, rainfall = <1.25 inches per year.. Anyway, why don't people do this more:
1) Extremely hard/harsh and unforgiving most of the time
2) We are social creatures by nature (except for a few hermits)
3) Self preservation (tough to replicate when your closest neighbor is 50 miles away, need each other for defense against violent visitors).
Anyway, the list is endless.
And finally, it is possible that in the next 100-200 years, this may be a requisite for survival as global temps rise, violence increases to the pint that a nuclear holocaust occurs, etc. The direction we're going is not necessarily the most promisning right now.

alright...here's the thing. Money. It controls everything in society. In our "free America" the only truly and honestly free people are the ones with lots and lots of money. They can get away with anything. They can do what they want.
You don't necassarily HAVE to get a job and start a family. But lets face it, the basic needs in life are food, shelter, and clothing (optional if you ask me, pending on climate). In civilized society food and shelter cost money. You have to have a job to make money...or you can steal but you'll go to jail.
So...do we have to follow societies plans? No. Is it a good idea? Probably for the time being. If you wanna live in the woods...go for it. No ones gonna stop you. But isn't that harder than havin a job?

When a person is raised in a certain type of society and lifestyle, it is only natural that they will identify activities within that lifestyle that bring them happiness. It would take a pretty dramatic event in a person's life for them to feel compelled to abandon the lifestyle and activities they've always known in favor of a dramatically different alternative. It's easy for those who don't like the culture of Western civilization to point fingers at politicians and media and all manner of other influential forces, but if you want to live in the woods somewhere in a tent and eat squirrels or whatever, nobody's stopping you, my friend.

This is the US. You CAN do whatever you want, you must accept the consequences however. Moving to the woods is completely fine, what will you do for food, bathroom, etc is up to you, but of course there are laws and permits to prevent people from doing this.
You don't have to start a family unless you have the urge.
More and more laws are passed to put all people in the same box....and one day I predict that the box will bust.

We are programmed at a very young age by our parents. Then society reinforces the program and adds to it. We can change the program and some of us manage to do just that.
First one needs to wake up and it sounds like your sleep has been disturbed. Whenever someone wants to escape from prison, it is very useful to have help both from the inside and the outside. It is also good to consult with those who have already managed to escape. Seak and ye shall find.

it is not OK because we were raised to think that getting married...going to school....starting families and all that jazz is normal and how life is suppose to be lived. I believe you can trace human behavior in society through up bringing... for example, if you have a conservative family you will most likely grow up a conservative. It is also not OK because people who go to live in communes are mocked by society and, frankly, our society builds low self-esteem...what with all the beautiful people they prance all over the media, so people are afraid to go against the grain because they fear rejection and mockery

As you grow older you'll realize that the majority of human beings want a family system to be truly happy, this means getting a job to provide a home, food, and all the necessities that come with it.

Because we run into all sorts of trouble if we act like that: doing as we please, regardless...
The think tanks have thought about it very deeply for millennia and they have determined that's how things should be. Everyday, still, they try to achieve "higher / better" levels of organization, in parliaments, governments, committees, etc.
Even forest people who have lived in forest villages for centuries, are being run out of their their traditional environments today. Because real estate is real estate, so even forest properties are being claimed more and more by the ruling societies.

I suppose it would be ideal to move into the wilderness and live somewhat devoid of stress and the feeling of being a mouse on a treadmill . . but What wilderness is there left available, in which to do this fully.
The human population has exploded, feeling little responsibility for what it has replaced, usurped, exploited, destroyed . . shall I continue?
Why even the animals whose habitats we've contaminated and decimated through our la-dee-da presence are naively coming into the in-lands for the food and space we've robbed from them.
Very oftentimes, they are further decimated by killing them, for "threatening" the lives of men.
What a fine kettle of DEAD fish, would you not agree?
