the air lines are very noisy so i was playing around and hooked the air lines to the air pump and it made it very quiet, can i do this?

I think I know what you're talking about here - you have a venturi-type skimmer and the intake for the air make a noise (that stops when you put a finger over the end of the air intake)?

I've never considered an air pump as a way to quite them, but it seems workable. I'd say to make sure to add a control valve to the tubing. You don't want to blow too much air into the skimmer and have the collection cup overflowing! You could also end up with too many bubbles leaving the skimmer and collecting under any rockwork in the tank. If you have live rock, air + bacteria = dead bacteria. Sponges and other life under the rocks don't appreciate the air either, so you may experience some die-off in the tank. If you try it, I'd advise you to monitor the output very closely!

sure, as long as it doesn't effect skimming......those air lines are sucking in air anyways
