I have a 1996 nitro bass boat with a 150 hp outboard mercury motor. When I push the throttle into gear, the boat will go, but it won't pick up any speed at all. Even when I push the throttle all the way down. I think it's only going 10-15 mph and it used to go over 50. What's wrong? Please help.

could be a host of things (1) high speed jets stopped up)(2) bad gas hose or pump primer.(3) bad gas(4) low compression(5) fireing problems(6)bad plugs or coils) see your local marine repair man. caution// if you keep running it and it is not firing on one of the cyn,s that means it,s not geting any oil and may burn your motor up(called leaning out)

Assuming that the engine is running smoothly and developing it's normal power, it sounds to me like you don't have the engine lowered to the correct set point to assure best planing angle. There is a pin under the engine near the swing up hinge point that is adjustable through multiple sets of holes to optimize the thrust angle.

When the engine is set at too high an angle, the nose will rise on applicatiion of power and not lower into the planing position as it picks up speed. Too much weight in the back of the boat and not enough in front will cause the same thing to happen.

sounds like the throttle cable has jumped off the cam guide inside the control box or the throttle linkage inside the engine. that would explain why it goes into gear but does not accelerate. does the throttle feel easier to push forward than it used to. if it does then this may be the problem.

You don't give a lot of info but if the engine is reving up and you are not going fast it could be you "spun " the hub of the prop. Its a rubber connection of the inner and outer prop hub that is designed to break should you hit something so you do not damage the prop or drive shaft. Other things it could be is incorrect or misadjusted throttle cable, engine in need of tune up, fuel filter, excess weight in the hull.
