I love both TTR and Settlers, but I don't think they're at their best as 2 player games. Here's some good 2 players to get you started:
Lost Cities - 2 player only
Balloon Cup - 2 player only
Tally Ho! - 2 player only
Cathedral - 2 player only
Settlers of Catan: Card Game - 2 player only
10 Days in (Africa, Europe, Asia, USA) - better with 3 or 4
Memoir '44 - 2 player only
Pick Picknik - better with 3 or 4
Kings in the Corner - good with 2, playable up to 4
Kazink!- good with 2, playable up to 4
Touche!- good with 2, playable up to 4
Sequence- good with 2, playable up to 4
Blokus - best with 4, look for the travel version for solid 2 player
Ingenious - good from 1 to 4 players

You got some very good answers above me, the thing is that more information about what a good game means to YOU would be helpful. Do you want something with a lot of strategy and thinking? A quick game? Something unusual? Something that will make you laugh? Something where you don't have to think a lot? We play games for a lot of different reasons, it would be improper of me to tell you what YOUR reasons are.
The best strategy game is Go, and you can learn it in 10 minutes, but expect to have to play it for 5 years before you are even sort of competent. "BattleLore" is a very new game where you simulate battles from the Middle Ages including use of Magic, it is highly rated and a lot of fum. "Twilight Struggle" is a game about the Cold War, you'll learn a lot of post WW2 history if you're into that sort of thing.
A bit on the easier side you might try "Lost Cities", a card game where you try to finish "expeditions" before your opponent.
Still too hard? Try Yahtzee, a quick dice game that is mostly luck but has some scope for decision making.
Like word games? Not my thing, but you can't beat scrabble. Be sure you have a dictionary handy............

The best game of all time has to be Monopoly... Either modern editions, or 1970's, 1950's, or even going back to the original made by Parker Brothers, in the 1930's, still has that game of fun and you can play with 2 or More players...

Well it's not actually a board game, but if it's with your mate I would suggest twister. That always makes an interesting evening. If not with your mate maybe checkers, scrabble, connect four, heck even battle ship, Me and my husband love playing battle ship together. I like it because I always win, heheheh.

Start with Ticket to Ride. Then graduate to Settlers of Catan. If you like those and want something even more challenging, check out BoardGameGeek.
