It happens that way when you keep them for a long time and you make an effort and sweat. All dirt comes there and it really smells awful. Try to clean them minimum once at 5 days and wash them and your ears, too. Use jewelry clearner or just soap and water (i do this at my golden ones).
Don't throw them away!!!Why? Just make them a bath :)
It happend to me, too because they were also too "bond" to my ears .

run them under a hot tap, clean using a bacterial soap, then place in a cup and pour over a kettle of boiling water, pour water away and allow to cool for a couple of mins b4 lifting them out, behind earrings is a trap for dirt and soap to build up, it happens, just try cleaning them more often

Humm, I was thinking that it might be dried dead skin (from it healing ) but I don't believe it's apposed to smell o.O. But it might have a sent but not a very strong one. So... It must have been skin.
As for cleaning it you could just dip it in some Grain Alcohol (Ethanol) ( much safer then Rubbing Alcohol I've read ).

that dirt u are talkin abt is a build up of sweat and dirt. perspiration smells hence the smell. all you have to do is either wash it or soak it in mentilated spirit and it is as good as new.
