it was Shakespeare who coined the term "war of the roses" in his play "Henry VI".
The Roses in war of the roses refer to the emblems of the houses of York and Lancaster in England. The house of York had a white rose while the house of Lancaster had a red rose. Both houses went to war for the English crown in the mid to late 1400's.
In 1485, Henry Tudor, half brother of Edward IV, defeated Richard II and united both roses (red and white) in the Tudor rose.

I believe it was Shakespeare who termed that phrase. And I think it was in reference to the 2 houses trying to gain control of England in the 1700's. The emblems on their crests were a white rose and a red rose... if I remember my history lessons.

MSDC nailed it, and as he implied the Tudor Rose is pink to symbolize that the two houses were brought together under the Tudors (Henry VII did have blood ties to both houses, and of course was the first person in years to be able to take and hold onto his power--hence the paranoia of Henry VIII in trying to get a male heir).
