My personal favorite is Moving Pictures... the one I think is the best is 2112. The music and the musicianship show a band at the top of their form, and the song writing is just amazing.

I think "Permanent Waves." You've got the radio friendly songs like "The Spirit of Radio", but you've also got some good progressive stuff like "Jacob's Ladder" or "Natural Science."

You ask 10 different Rush fans (like me) & you'll get 20 diff' replies.
But my personal faves are:
"A Farewell to Kings" & "Hemispheres". (I love their 'prog phase)
BUT... in terms of mainstream big albums, you're likely to hear "Moving Pictures" or "Permanent Waves".
