My husband works in sales for an industry that he needs to get out of. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a college degree and is finding it hard to even get interviews without one, even though he's held his jobs for long stretches of time and has always done well at them. You'd think years of work experience would offset the lack of a college degree, but I guess not. He's looked into going back to school, but it's expensive and will take 3 years!! Can anyone offer any advice on how you can best go about finding a new job when you don't have a college degree?

Thanks for the answers, guys, bu he's a 40 year-old professional who is interested in a lateral job move to a different field or company where he can make similar money to what he is making now. He's not looking for temp work or internships.

The best way would be for him to go back to school. Most recruiters/hiring professionals see a lot of resumes and cull through them quickly. One of the ways that he can be quickly removed from the stack of resumes they see is that he doesn't have a degree. I know it sounds harsh, but there have to be guidelines when they are reviewing...so if a degree is a requirement, then they'll move on quick without even asking for an interview.

It won't be easy for him to take the time to go to school, but it could be worth it as on average college graduates do make more. Community college is a great way to start off and the associates degree would be a start for an employer. Also, check into financial aid. I know it's odd now since there is income, but you can try for funding.

If it isn't possible or the two of you just don't want to go the school route then it's going to have to go to a "who you know" option for finding a new job. Work on that network and don't be shy about it. It REALLY can help and work out for you to use it. We all know someone who knows someone else who knows another person that could figure out how to get you that job.

a community college degree can also help in this job market. My sister has one and she is doing a fine job at OfficeTeam which is a long term position. So, it doesn't take a college degree from a 4-year university to find a job. Community college is not that expensive and doesn't take that long to finish. These employers just look at experience and not the degree. Once your husband have the knowledge of computer skills, then he can register for temp agencies in the area. Good luck.

Don’t look for a job just go full time into college for the first 1.5 years. Then, while still in school start looking for internship.
