The state was supposed to send me material for a medical review, which they did not do. My license expires on Thursday and it will be 1-2 months before The review is complete.

Your ID isn't valid if it is expired. Are you planning to switch/get new insurance soon? If so, there might be some problems. You'll want to explain your situation to them.

If you're just continuing your existing insurance policy you shouldn't have to even show them your expired license to remew the policy.

Well of course it is not legal for you to drive, so if you are driving, it is illegal. some policies have clauses that they do not pay as a result of an illegal activity.

also if they do continue to insure you, the rate will go way up, since you are a higher risk by the underwriting standards.

Not if you don't get caught driving with it.
Your best bet would be to call the DMV and find out from the authority, to be certain.
