Aside from chain restaurants, I would like to find a decent and affordable establishment, possibly unique and/or considered a hidden gem. Any suggestions?

I really like the Sunday Champagne brunch (ala carte items, no brunch) at Mo's in Burbank. The Sportsman's Lodge has a Sunday Champagne buffet that's not too bad.

Also, many of the Indian restaurants in both counties have a Sunday Champagne brunch.

Lastly, if you can get into Magic Castle, they have a Sunday champagne brunch along with magic shows.

OMG-You HAVE to go TAPS Fishouse & Brewery in Brea (north OC) for their Sunday Jazz Brunch! It is AWESOME & very reasonable...about $30 per person with free-flowing champagne or microbrew beers. Best of al, they have a very cute dixieland jaxx 4 piece band that plays through the whole brunch. I have to been to bunches of brunches even though there are very few left and this is by far the BEST!! They have a website-put TAPS Brea in the search engine & you'll find it.

I like to go to the Queen Mary brunch in Long Beach. Its about $30 per person and they have SO much food and after you can walk it all off around the ship and take a little tour which is cool. Or if you go to San pedro ports of call they have a nice one as well its smaller and cheaper but still good food and then you can do shopping or sit and watch the boats go by.

The Beach House in Laguna Beach has a great brunch. You can see the menu here: http://www.thebeachhouse.com/

The view is amazing. The place was literally a beach house once, and if you sit on the deck, you're looking down immediately at the beach and the waves. It's the most beautiful restaurant view I've seen.

check out Il Cugini on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica... but you will need reservations plenty of time in advance (because of the Wave Jazz Brunch 94.7 FM)
the food is wonderful!
