is there a book or an online place to go without having to pay any fees? i'm trying to cover all my basis and be prepared for the worst

They are going to very by state pretty radically. Try the child support/county clerk website for your county.

If you're preparing for the worst, you probably aren't going to be able to avoid fees. but to start preparing yourself, If I were you I would try to get a free consultation with an attorney to answer you're direct questions. Just know, that if you guys are going to argue about ANYTHING, your safer to spend the extra money for an attorney than you may be in the end after trying to handle things yourself. The only way to have a cheap divorce is if there is no contest. If both of you agree on everything.
