When the batsman gets out, the umpire knows that the batsman is gonna go to his dressing room and has the privelege of releiving himself.. But, this umpire wants to do that too. So, everytime a batsman gets out, he raises his finger to tell others that he too needs to go to relieve himself.. Bad luck for him..he has to wait till all 10 players gets out, then he has his chance...

In olden days, the finger was not raised up , it was raised towards the dressing room - telling the batsmen, he is out and needs to return to the dressing room. Over a period of time, it has been standardized to raising the finger, bcaz the dressing room could be in any part of the ground, with respect to the umpire's position.
