There was no reproach in either their faces or in their hearts, only the knowledge that they must die in order that he might remain alive, and that this was part of the unavoidable order of things…Tragedy, he perceived, belonged to the ancient time, to a time when there was still privacy, love, and friendship, and when the members of a family stood by one another without needing to know the reason. It was about a dream he had of his mother and siblings.
Somehow he knew that they had sacraficed their lives to save his. Winston began to think about life. He feels the emtional tragedy of the death of his family and thinks that you can only feel tragedy when you are free to love, have friends, know love. If you are unable to have these things then you cannot discern tragedy from how everyday life feels because you have no one or nothing to lose or feel sorrow for. Without freedom of choice, dignity, privacy, and some concept of loyalty, there was no tragedy because there was nothing to lose. It was all gone from the beginning and you lived as an animal without free will and conscious choice. Someone else made the decisions and told you how to think and how to feel, what to do and how to do it.

Void, void, void, and more void... Without heart and soul there is only the casing of existence... Going thru the motions of a living does NOT equal life...
